Description
Reviewer: Vicki Ann Moss, DNSc, MS, BSN, RN(University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh). Description: Describing the historical development of nursing theory, types of theory, and barriers to theory development and use, this book identifies the major nurse theorists and the tenets of their work. Purpose: ”The goal, according to the author, is to raise “the consciousness of the reader of the theoretical development and progress of our discipline. Audience: Although primarily intended for graduate students, faculty, clinicians, researchers, and theoreticians, the book also can be used as a reference by any RN who’s interested in the development of the profession and the contribution of theory and research to advancing nursing’s knowledge. Features: ”The 20 chapters are grouped into six parts: “Our Theoretical Journey,” “Our Theoretical Heritage,” “Our Discipline and its Structure,” “Reviewing and Evaluating: Pioneering Theories,” “Our Theoretical Future,” and “Our Historical Literature.” Chapter 20 is a bibliography of historical and current theory that includes video and audio tapes. This edition expands information on situation-specific theory. Assessment: This is an all-encompassing theory book that is an excellent choice for graduate theory courses. It is very thorough in describing how knowledge has been developed throughout the years and what the future holds for the discipline of nursing. The chapter references and the final bibliography are in themselves useful resources for students or others interested in a certain theorist, or for faculty developing a theory course. Every graduate student and graduate faculty should have this in their personal library
