Description
Aqueous extract of Abrus precatorius leaf was claimed to have haemopoeitic effect. Forty-two mice that weighed 25.76±2.39 g were administered 0.0, 12.5, 25.0, 50.0, 100.0 and 200.0 mg/kg body weight of aqueous extract of A. precatorius leaf for a period of 3 weeks. Pretreatment blood sample (0.3 mL) was collected from tail vein of each mouse on day 1 and thereafter on days 7, 14 and 21 of the experimentation for determination of packed cell volume and plasma electrolytes. However, total blood volume was determined by multiplying plasma volume by 100/100 minus haematocrit, and red cell volume was determined by subtracting plasma volume from total blood volume. The results showed significant (P<0.05) increased weight gain in groups administered 50 and 200 mg/kg body weight of the extract. All the mice administered the dose range between 12.5 and 200 mg/kg of the extract revealed significant increase (P<0.05) in haematocrit, red cell volume and total blood volume. But only the group administered 50 mg/kg showed increased (P<0.05) plasma volume. There was significant (P<0.05) increased sodium, chloride, bicarbonate and inorganic phosphate ions. Hence aqueous extract of A. precatorius leaf may have haematonic and plasma expander effects in Mus musculus.
