Description
Helicobacter pylori represents a major infection in humans and is a leading cause of peptic ulceration, chronic active gastritis, and gastric intestinal metaplasia. The latter two gastric lesions are believed to be major contributing factors to gastric malignancy. Clinical data have suggested that there is an inverse relationship between H. pylori infection and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). This study was designed to evaluate the epidemiology of the histologic changes associated with H. pylori and intestinal metaplasia of the esophagus (Barrett’s esophagus).
