Description
Hemiarthroplasty of the hip is a common procedure for treatment of displaced intracapsular fractures of the femoral neck. Cementing the stem in the femur may lead to the cardiovascular complications of bone cement implantation syndrome, whereas the use of uncemented stems has been associated with an increase in intraoperative fractures. In this article, a series of 172 consecutive procedures performed with an established modular, uncemented HA-coated prosthesis are presented. There were no intraoperative deaths or periprosthetic fractures as a result of stem insertion, demonstrating that it can be used safely when an uncemented option is preferred.
