Description
Background: Large cranial vault reconstruction is a major challenge particularly in younger patients to achieve the goals of plastic surgery and implant choice. Methods: In the surgery described here, a new custom- made implant of PEEK was implanted with a screw and plate osteosynthesis method in a patient with a frontobasal cranial fracture after a motor vehicle accident. The operation was performed in a 3-hour setting after a 3D-CCT reconstruction of the PSI (Patient Specific Implant) implant. Results: Three months after the accident the procedure was performed without any complication. A few days later the patient was able to leave the hospital and the last follow-up visit showed excellent cosmetic results. Conclusions: Having in mind the characteristics of the described material and the easy to use fixation technique, PEEK might be seen as the implant of choice for future cranial reconstruction procedures.
