Description
To our knowledge, there is no published data of cardiomyopathy, and particularly cardiac hypertrophy, related to copper deficiency after bariatric surgery. Neither has it been reported in bariatric patients with neurological or haematological disorders due to copper deficiency. As Medeiros states, cardiac hypertrophy has been only described in weaning rats and mice fed with severely copperrestricted diets [2–4], raising the question of clinical relevance. Moreover, younger animals are more susceptible to copper deficiency as compared to mature animals, but the precise mechanisms for this differential sensitivity are not well understood [2, 5]. On the contrary, less severe copper restriction does not cause cardiac hypertrophy in adult animals [6], even when the diet is maintained in the long-term [7]. However, a detailed optical and electron microscopy study has identified pathological changes in the cardiomyocytes of these animals [7]. Therefore, we agree with Prof. Medeiros on the need of studying the eventual cardiological consequences of copper deficiency in bariatric patients, and new studies are necessary to clarify this issue.
