Sirs, The classification of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) according to the presence of prodromal diarrhea due to infection by Shiga-like toxin-producing bacteria (typical HUS) or not (atypical HUS) should be changed to a more current classification according to the trigger or cause because, in light of growing insights into its pathophysiology, the typical/atypical HUS terminology can be considered to be an over-simplification of the syndrome [1, 2].
