Description

Dear Editor, In most developing countries, and in some developed countries such as the United States, the inability to access health care due to a lack of insurance or a socialized equalaccess health care system can lead to poor quality of life and increased disease burden [1]. Given the worldwide epidemic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children [2], it is important to understand how health care system access may impact the transition of children with CKD to adult care. The recently passed United States healthcare reform bill acknowledged this gap, and allowed parents to continue to maintain health insurance on their children as they transition into adulthood, up to age 26. In Indiana, as well as in multiple states throughout the United States, children with CKD are eligible for state and/or federal programs to ensure adequate healthcare coverage. However, the majority of these programs end when a child reaches age 19, placing them at a high risk for being uninsured as young adults with a potential for adverse effects on their kidney disease, hospital stays, and their overall health.
