Description
Rhabdomyolysis refers to the breakdown of skeletal muscle due to either a physical, biological, or toxic injury that leads to leakage of muscle contents, such as myoglobin and creatinine kinase (CK), into the extracellular fluid. This syndrome is classically characterized clinically by muscle weakness and pain and at times tea-colored urine. Serum myoglobin is filtered by the glomerulus, leading to myoglobinuria. This may lead to direct renal tubular injury and a clinical presentation ranging from mild to lifethreatening acute kidney injury (AKI).
