Description
SurfControl Instant Message Filter is an enterprise
server that reduces the risks associated with the use
of public instant messaging (IM) and peer-to-peer (P2P)
file sharing, securing them for use on a corporate
network. Unauthorized usage of these protocols is
blocked by SurfControl Instant Message Filter.
Most firewalls by themselves cannot reliably block IM
and P2P communications. This is because these so-called
ærogue protocolsÆ can port scan and communicate through
any open port, including tunneling through port 80
(generally always open to allow Web browser access to
the Internet). This makes it impossible to block all
rogue protocol communications by simply closing
firewall ports.
