پروژه‌ی qBittorrent مارس ۲۰۰۶ شروع شد. به منظور ساخت یک نرم افزار BitTorrent سبک و پرکاربرد که دارای چند پلتفرم و بسیار آسان جهت استفاده باشد.
qBittorrent v2 نزدیک ترین منبع باز (GNU GPL v2 license) مشابه برنامه‌ی mtorrent است.
qBittorrent برمبنای Qt4 toolkit و libtorrent-rasterbar است.
