We live in an age of the digital and technological revolution. We have witnessed seismic changes in how the rapid advances of digital technology continually influences how we live, communicate, conduct business, shop, travel, and work. New language has been introduced to our vocabulary with phrases such as, Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence. In fact there is barely a facet of life that is not influenced by technology. Whilst these change are hugely beneficial to us, our life of convenience comes at a cost and that cost is our privacy.
Privacy: Our privacy is a priceless commodity and is a fundamental human right but yet it is continually under threat of being compromised. Connectivity of gadgets, wearable devices, apps and smart appliances have significantly increased the threat of personal data being compromised. These devices are constantly gathering our personal information often without our knowledge or consent. Do we know where that information is being stored and who has access to it? It is estimated that by 2020 there will be twenty one billion connected devices worldwide. The rapid development in digital technology has been met equally with the seismic increase in globally reported cybercrime incidents. Recent research estimates the global cost of cybercrime to the business world to reach $6 Trillion annually by 2021
Compliance: Business owners and organisations are the gatekeepers of customer, client and employee personal information. This very valuable asset should be afforded the maximum level of security to protect against loss, theft, or any threat of compromise. Data protection compliance can no longer be ignored by business communities, as underpinned by the Irish Data Protection Commissioner stating “it cannot be business as usual” following the implementation of GDPR, 25th May 2018. This will introduce the greatest shakeup in data protection legislation in decades, introducing fines of up to €20,000,000 and severe sanctions. Numerous legal obligations will be enforced on Data Controllers and Data Processors. Data Subject rights will be greatly enhanced giving individuals more control over how their personal information is processed. Challenging times ahead and procrastination is not an option to delay preparation for the implementation of the Data Protection Regulations on 25th May 2018.
