Description
Despite advances in the management of critically ill patients and technological advances in renal replacement therapy (RRT), acute renal failure (ARF) remains a dramatic syndrome with an ominous prognosis. Structural and functional changes in the ageing kidney predispose elderly individuals to ARF. The greater incidence of concomitant systemic diseases, including cardiac failure, diabetes mellitus and hypertension, and the presence of additional risk factors such as dehydration, investigations with contrast media and nephrotoxic medications, make the elderly very vulnerable. Also obstructive uropathy is more common in the elderly.
